City of Detroit to host Minority Business Summit

Summit to help participants understand the City’s contracting and procurement process and learn about Motor City Contractor Fund

Detroit is hosting a Minority Business Summit to share vital information on the contracting and procurement process within City government. The free event is hosted by City Council Members Mary Waters (At-Large), Angela Calloway (District 2), and Latisha Johnson (District 4) along with City of Detroit Associate Director with the Office of Contracting and Procurement, Toni Stewart-Limmitt. Detroit City Council President, Mary Sheffield (District 5), and Council Member Gabriela Santiago-Romero (District 6) will bring special greetings.

In addition, attendees will learn details about the recently announced Motor City Contractor Fund designed to help Detroit-based minority businesses gain access to funding. The free Summit is virtual and in-person Saturday, April 23 from 1PM-4PM at Wayne County Community College District, Downtown Campus. There’s a limit to the first 100 people at WCCD.

With several projects planned in the coming months, the City is in need of a myriad of goods and services. Plus, there’s a great need for construction workers to handle the work associated with ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) projects, Proposal N bond work, and the Detroit Land Bank.

“Many small and minority business owners are frustrated by what they feel is not a transparent process to gain contracts with the City of Detroit. My goal is to pull back the curtain, and de-mystify the process of contracting with government entities,” said Member Waters.

“We will continue to outreach and engage wherever we can to encourage small, Detroit-based minority-owned businesses to take part in the City’s bid opportunities. This Summit will provide important information and insight in the procurement process,” said Stewart-Limmitt.

Griggs, Esq, Director of Compliance, Civil Rights, Inclusion and Opportunity Department and Monica Daniels, Finance Asset Manager, Detroit Water and Sewerage Department.
