Buildings License Checklist
Step 1
Applications are available:
(for printing purposes only) or by visiting the City of Detroit Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department Buildings Division (Room 408) at Two Woodward Avenue, Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, Detroit, MI 48226 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Applicant MUST have a current and valid State of Michigan Contractors License BEFORE he/she can apply for Renewal/Registration with City of Detroit.
Documentation Required:
If Registration ONLY: Need copies of current and valid State Contractors License.
If Renewal: Need a current drivers license or State ID.
Step 2
Documentation required:
Registration: Current State of MI OR City of Detroit issued Master Buildings License and Buildings Contractor License.
Renewal: Current Driver's License or State ID. If Master Plumber hired is Licensed with State of MI, Buildings Division will require a copy of the current Master Plumber License.
Note: Make checks (starter checks are not accepted) payable to: "Treasury City of Detroit". Other payment methods accepted are cash, credit cards (Master Card, Visa or Discover only), money orders and cashier's checks.
Fees: Refer to Renewal and Registration Fee schedule online for applicable fees
If application submitted by mail, the License will be mailed to applicant. This permit process takes 5 - 10 business days
If application submitted in person, the License is issued to the applicant in person on the same day
Step 3
Supervisor in the Buildings Division verifies application and supporting documentation necessary for approval
Step 4
Once the approval is obtained, applicant will be responsible for paying all associated fees to the License & Permits Division Cashiering Desk
Step 5
License is issued
