Board of Police Commissioners Hearing Appeals
Hearings
Board of Police Commission meetings follow the Michigan Open Meeting Act.
The Act allows a public body to meet in closed session to discuss personnel matters. The BOPC sometimes holds closed sessions to discuss personnel matters related to suspensions and other disciplinary actions. However, the Board reconvenes in a public forum to vote, often by roll call.
Under current collective bargaining agreements, police officers involved in disciplinary actions, such as suspensions without pay, also have the right to request a closed session by the Board.
Appeals
The Board of Police Commissioners is responsible for hearing appeals from candidates rejected by the Police Academy. A candidate may request a hearing by contacting the Board at [email protected].
