Eliza Howell Park
Eliza Howell Park is Detroit’s third largest park with 250 acres of natural areas, trails and park amenities along the Rouge River in Detroit's Brightmoor neighborhood. The park is a wildlife haven with regular Audubon nature walks, it also has vibrant arts and culture scene, made possible through partnerships with local organizations such as Sidewalk Detroit.
NOTICE: THE PARK WILL BE CLOSED TO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC FROM JULY UNTIL THIS FALL FOR ROAD RECONSTRUCTION. THE PARK WILL REMAIN OPEN TO FOOT TRAFFIC.
Improvements Coming to Eliza Howell Park:
State Grant Opportunity for "nature play and access"
The City of Detroit Parks and Recreation Division (DPRD) is currently applying for grant funding for improvements at the park. This season DPRD will be conducting community engagement to hear what nature play and access projects would best serve local residents and families. Grant awards will be announced at the end of the year.
There will be additional community meetings held in 2023 to discuss what amenities and improvements are wanted in Eliza Howell Park.
Nature Trail Improvements
Sidewalk Detroit is leading some improvements to the existing nature trail south of the park loop road from the trailhead to the pedestrian bridge.
Road Reconstruction
The City is improving the 1.3 miles road through Eliza Howell Park. The project includes reconstructing sections in poor condition and resurfacing those in fair condition, as well improving the current stormwater system and adding separated shared use path with grass/planted median strip. Construction will begin in spring of 2023 and be completed by late-summer. The City is currently looking into alternative parking and access to areas of the park that will not be under construction for this time period. We anticipate the park will be closed to vehicular traffic from early May until late August 2023.
